Horse Show Tip # 10 – Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Horse show. Edinburg VA, August 2010
Focus on the Positive Aspects of Your Ride (Photo credit: Janet Moore-Coll)

Nothing sells your horse better to the horse show judge than riding it. And what I mean by riding is making the performance count. Don’t sweat the small stuff and focus on the positive aspects of the round.

If you make a small error that is ok. Do not magnify it to the judge by making a noticeable big deal about it. Keep it to yourself and vow to work on it in your next schooling session.

Please take the time to write a comment below about a time when a small thing wasn’t worth making a big deal about. I remember judging a show and the competitor cantered lovely down the line of jumps and I second guessed myself about the number of strides the horse put in between the jumps. Was it the correct 4 strides or was it a 5 with out the horse going forward. I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt, and was just about to give her a score when the coach practically shouted to her, “it was nice except you added in the last line”. Great – and thank you.
